The Equation of SHM
One sine curve, three knobs: amplitude, angular frequency and phase.
Lesson at a glanceShow the key points
- Speed at displacement x: v = ω√(A² − x²) (12.5), maximum Aω at the centre and zero at the ends.
- Displacement: x = A sin(ωt + δ) (12.6); velocity v = Aω cos(ωt + δ) (12.7); acceleration −ω²x.
- Period T = 2π/ω = 2π√(m/k) (12.8); frequency ν = 1/T = (1/2π)√(k/m) in hertz; ω is the angular frequency.
- Phase ωt + δ fixes position and direction of motion; the phase constant δ depends on when t = 0 is chosen.
- The period does not depend on the amplitude.
From a = −ω²x alone, a little calculus gives the complete story: where the particle is, how fast it moves, at every moment.
Speed at each position
Write . Then . Integrate from the starting state (x₀, v₀) to a general (x, v):
Position at each moment
Now . Integrating, , where δ is a constant fixed by the starting position. So:
The vocabulary of SHM
Amplitude A
Since sin lies between −1 and +1, x lies between −A and +A: A is the greatest displacement from the centre.
Time period T
One complete oscillation brings the particle back to the same position moving the same way (Q → P → Q, or O → P → Q → O). Both sin and cos repeat when the angle grows by 2π, so :
Frequency ν and angular frequency ω
The frequency is the number of oscillations per second, (12.9, 12.10), measured in hertz (Hz). ω itself is the angular frequency, in rad/s.
Phase and phase constant
The angle is the phase. It tells you the state of the motion: φ = 0 means passing the centre moving in the +x direction; φ = π/2 means at +A, momentarily at rest; φ = π, passing the centre moving in the −x direction; φ = 3π/2, at −A. Adding 2π brings you back to the same state.
δ, the phase constant, depends only on which instant you call t = 0. Start the clock as the particle passes the centre going forward and δ = 0, so x = A sin ωt; start it at the positive extreme and δ = π/2, so x = A cos ωt. The sine and cosine forms describe the same motion with different δ.
A 500 g mass oscillates on a spring of constant 50 N/m. Find the period and frequency.
A particle in SHM of amplitude A is at x = −A/2 at t = 0 and moving in the +x direction. Find δ if x = A sin(ωt + δ).
A particle oscillates with ω = 4.0 rad/s and amplitude 5.0 cm. Find its maximum speed, its maximum acceleration, and its speed 3.0 cm from the centre.
- 1, .
- 2, ; independent of amplitude.
- 3Phase ωt + δ fixes the state; δ depends on the choice of t = 0.
- 4v_max = Aω at the centre; a_max = Aω² at the extremes.
